I recently bought an HP Stream (14") for my parents who needed a Windows based laptop for Word/light surfing. Testing it out... the thing played many Steam games (old CRPG and turn-based stuff really well.

Is this the best middle of the road laptop that is Windows based for Steam/computer games? At $300 it has a AMD A4 Micro-6400T with a R3 GPU. Fanless and thin.

I would like to get a similar cheap and small laptop but cannot find one that is 14" and comparing at both the price vs performance.

Thanks for any advice or direction!

The Stream is more towards Entry level without dipping down to the Bay Trail-M's or Atoms. The integrated GPUs in Intel CPUs are weak and is severely outmatched by the AMD APUs. Making AMD a better choice in situations like this.

If you want more middle of the road then the best to get would be something with the A6 which will cost a bit more. As for finding laptops that are small like the 14" you won't really have much luck as 15.6" is "the norm"

While I think the Stream is a great concept and a wonderful idea, paying a bit more can get you a lot such as these.

You're getting much more Memory, much more...

You're getting much more Memory, much more storage, slightly bigger screen (if they are like my parents where sight is sort of an issue), and they'll have much stronger processors/graphics. It will cost more, but for what the Stream 14 has and at its price, I believe either of those 2 are better for price-to-performance ratio.

Thanks for the advice and options. I'll jump on something one way or another this Holiday season.
