Apparently it's a very close call, but the R9-M290X offers better performance.

I'm hesitating between a 17.3 MSI with 8970m and a 15.6 one with R9-M290X . (both are the same models)

Apparently it is just a rebrand but I really need to know if it's worth it.
Is it worth "sacrificing" the screen size for better performance?

Solution
Yes, the R9-M290X is a rebranding of the 8970M, while they should perform the same. The R9-M290X might be able to clock up higher though. One thing you should consider is a) are there any differences in CPU? b) are there any differences in Screen Res?

If one has an i5 and the other an i7, getting the one with the better CPU would tip the balance in its favour. Otherwise if the 17" is 1080p (which i prefer) and the 15" is 1366x768, then that would technically go further since you need to render half the amount of pixels that the 1080p screen does which puts less work on the video card.
