SD card when inserted into computer used to open a little option screen. I could import pictures into where ever I wanted, or I could just view etc. Now there is nothing unless I wire up the camera & connect to Computer & jump through a few hoops to get my pictures.

Do you really need it to show up on its own? If your computer is still able to read the card, you can access it through the "My Computer" shortcut, or whatever it is called now in Windows 8.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the situation? If you mean that the card just can't be read unless it's connected to your PC via a USB cable connected to your camera, then it might be a problem with the card reader.
