I use several computers with external hard disks. Using them has been and is without any problems (with operating systems Win 7, and one with Win XP). The newest computer, DELL M4800 (i7-4800MQ), 64-bit, with Win 7 Professional, makes an exception, and does not connect to the external hard disk Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB (USB 3.0 + USB 2.0 compatible). All the USB ports of DELL M4800 are labeled as being SS = super speed (one is "SATA"), the older computers not having such "SS" labeling in those ports.

DELL M4800 is accessing e.g. Buffalo HD - HC500U2 - R (USB 2.0), and Buffalo HD-PNTU 3 (USB 3.0), but today I remarked that it did not access also these last-mentioned ones but only after I had restarted the computer! In the case of WD My Passport restarting the computer does not help (it has been never been accessed by M4800), but this hard disk is being normally accessed by e.g. DELL Precision M4500 (64-bit) and older Compacs (32-bit).

Solution
Hi there sincc,

Is the drive recognized by Disk Management or Device Manager? If it is, you can just uninstall it -> unplug the drive -> reboot and plug the HDD again.

Hope this will help,
