Toshiba Satellite Pro won't power on if PSU plugged in

Hey there, my girlfriend has a Toshiba satellite Pro c660-1t1, and she's been having some issues with it.
Now, I'm fairly computer savvy myself; built a couple of systems and always help friends trouble shooting hardware/software issues. However, I'm a complete novice with a laptop, besides changing a screen on an old one of my fathers, I've never done anything to one.
So, she says occasionally it turns itself off (I explained what blue screen is, and asked if it did that but she doesn't seem to think so, it apparently just completely dies) and it will never actually power on if the power supply is connected. By this I mean, when plugged in, the laptop is as useful as a brick, but once you unplug the power supply it'll turn on without any issues.
I think I'm going to get a new battery for it anyway to make sure, but do you think there's a serious problem here?
I'm trying to convince her to let me just take it apart and give it a thorough cleaning, but I've a feeling this alone wont sort it.
Any ideas or help are greatly appreciated, thanks!

Its completely turned off and didn't just go to sleep right? Try this before you go buying a new battery. Take the laptop take the battery out of the laptop, make sure its not plugged in and try hitting the power button a few times. Nothing should happen, I know. Now try plugging just the adapter to the laptop WITHOUT the battery and see if it turns on. (It should, without a battery a laptop is just like any other anchored PC). If everything is fine, then put the battery back in and then try turning it on again.
