Travel messaging and phoning

When abroad can hotel wifi serve to send and receive texts messages and phone calls? I know about roaming charges and the airplane mode. I also know that I can use email; my question is about the phone.

Check out RokaCom (https://www.rokacom.com). Both people have to have the app, but it will work on mobile carrier data or wifi, and it encrypts calls and messages between users. It what we use at my company, and I got my wife an account to so we can call each other when i travel overseas.
It will work on mobiles with wifi only like ipads and android tablets.

Yes hotel WiFi will work, but there is little or no security or privacy. The hotel has the capability of seeing any or all of your messages and phone calls. Besides, why let undesirable people know that you are away from your Naperville residence?
