1) Acer Aspire E5-771G 17.3" HD+
GeForce 840M,Core i5-4210U,8GB RAM,1000GB
or
2) Acer Aspire E5-551G 15,6" HD matt
Radeon R7 M265 2GB, AMD A10-7300, 8GB RAM, 1000GB HDD,

is it better to have a quadcore and an alright video card or is it better to have a duel core and a better video card?

Here are the benchmarks on the 265m
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-R7-M265.109394.0.html
and the 840m
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-840M.105681.0.html

you can see that the M265 specs considerably below the 840m, scoring as much as 20FPS less in Battlefield.

The m265 + A10-7300 APU combination will also use more energy and produce more heat.

I would go with the Intel/NVidia build without hesitation, given the choice.

I would try and find a little more money or an open box/refurbish deal for:

The 860m in the Lenovo y50 is...

The words "laptop" and "gaming" kind of contradict each other for the price range you're looking at. For the same money you could build yourself a mini-itx system with quite a bit more bite!

But if you insist, buy the E5-551G, the graphics card is faster in gaming, the other one is only faster in synthetic benchmarks.

The 860m in the Lenovo y50 is a lot better for comparatively little more money.
