So about 2 months ago I had a required windows update which forced a reboot, and after it rebooted it never turned back on fully - I waited a very long time around half an hour before pulling the plug and had to wait, continuously taking the battery out and restarting it until it finally worked several hours later. (when I wasn't touching it)

Since I normally hibernate my computer, this is not an issue, but now every time I restart my computer it will make the whole screen black and sometimes I can't even hear the fan going.
So I assume it's something to do with the windows update? I'm using an Asus N56JR which uses a hybrid graphics card of nvidia geforce 760M and an inbuilt intel graphics card so there might be some problems there, but I have since updated the BIOS and graphic cards drivers so any other help will be appreciated
(Oh and I'm running windows 8.1)

Other info: I have tried the usual taking out battery and charger and holding the power button but this does not seem to affect anything

The computer runs fine until I restart and then this happens again

The Wireless and Hard drive icons are repeatedly flashing

The fan is turned on and USB ports are working but I can't seem to access safe mode boot or BIOS.

okay so this already sounds like you opened you pc up and moved stuff around because this can happen if you moved a jumper or ram in a desktop and it can happen if you move the ram or certain wires in a laptop. So if you have been opening it up then you just need to open it again and look for any hardware problems.

I haven't opened up my laptop once, it's just that in the past it would eventually turn on but this time it's been over a day with no progress.

i had the same problem.
open control panel, go to applications, open the list of installed windows updates and search for these 2 updates:
KB2982791
KB2975719

uninstall these 2 updates
reboot the computer

the problem is solved.
