I've looked online for laptops with SSD stock and haven't found any. Does anyone have a guess as to why this isn't standard for laptops nowadays given the power saving and weight difference?

D'OH!!!!

Yes, you are correct.

Gigabyte is the super-virus that is the combination of Megabyte and Hexadecimal. Both of them were created from Gigabyte when it/he was destroyed. And Gigabyte was briefly reformed when a web creature temporarily recombined Megabyte and Hexadecimal.

They are pretty much reserving SSDs for ultrabooks to keep them thin. Traditional laptops have become the low-cost alternative, especially at retail outlets.

They sell low end machines and high end machines because those make them the most money. Full feature mid-range platforms can only be purchased online.

What I did was purchase a laptop with the specs I wanted and added my own 2.5" SSD. Turned the 5400RPM 1TB it came with into an external USB drive with a cheap Rosewill enclosure.

It's slowly becoming the standard. A lot of the mid-range laptops and ultrabooks come with some form of a hybrid drive now and the higher-end models frequently come with an SSD. But yeah, cost is a major factor. You can get a 500GB or even a 1TB HDD for the cost of a 250GB SSD. Economically, it just makes more sense for manufacturers to use the cheaper HDD since your average consumers don't know the difference and are just impressed with the large amount of storage.

Hey Gigabyte,

There are certainly many laptops on the market that do come with a SSD or can be configured with one from the brand's website. As noted above, the reason where it is not in every laptop is due to cost. The price per GB is decreasing year over year, but they are still relatively expensive compared to regular hard drives.

They are generally excluded from budget and mainstream laptops to keep prices down to where most people can afford to purchase those laptops. SSDs are more abundant in laptops that are more expensive as well as thin and light.

If you are looking for a SSD in an inexpensive laptop, then you are not going to be able to find on. You would need to purchase the laptop and a SSD, then replace the HDD with the SSD yourself.

I was like, who is called Gigabyte in this thread, then I noticed the avatar of the OP. That is a picture of Megabyte, the villain from Reboot. (He became Gigabyte later in the series and he looked different) Good times.
