how do i hook up regulsr cable to my smart tv using just the old cable wire

I don't have cable any more but I heard you can use the cable wire to get regular channels instead of using a converter box, but I don't know how to hook it up.

Used to be, if you didn't have, or recently cancelled your cable subscription, the basic level channels would still be activated.
Until the cable company remembered, and turned it off completely to your residence.

Pretty sure that doesn't exist anymore.

But to try it, simply connect the coax out of the wall to your TV if it has a coax input. See what happens.
If it doesn't, you're out of luck.
Sometimes the cable wire is also connected to or acts as an antenna for your local, over-the-air broadcast channels. You can try just attaching the cable to the HDTV (assuming it has a coaxial input) and scan for channels. It may work, it may not.
