Dell Inspiron 1525 starts then screen goes black.

I have an inspiron 1525, it hasn't really worked for about a year. I have the charger and it charges and turns on, but after the dell logo loads, then the screen just goes black. I can tell that the computer is still "on" but i cant do anything. Ive gotten menus up and stuff by pressing f2 or f12, but i don't really know what to do beyond that. I would like to try to do this myself rather than paying for someone to look at it. Thanks

The easiest solution would probably be to reinstall the operating system. Becuase it passes the dell screen, it is for sure an OS problem and not hardware.
