Hello,

I've been lurking for a while in toms hardware, but this problem seems to be novel so i needed to post it.

The computer I am talking about is HP elitebook 840 G1.

I got some pipe cleaning gel in my laptop. it was sideways in my backpack and for some strange reason the gel bottle broke and, well, one side of my laptop was in it. Not the vent side but the side with 2 USB ports, a docking port and the charging port. I was at school at the time so I just removed the battery and raced home, but that means 15min more in that liquid. I tried to remove all I could from it (It seems to be too difficult for me to remove the motherboard completely, there are ribbon cables connecting it and I can't seem to access them well).

So the situation is that one edge of the casing is discolored and I think there is still some liguid inside the laptop. It seems it didn't get very far as the SSD and the side of the mobo that i CAN access, are clean.

What do you think are my chances? Should I start looking for cheap new parts? Any idea how to remove more of this damned gel? What might happen if i do not remove it?
Any advice would be just wonderful.

Thank you!

Can't know until you turn it on and try things out. Those ports might be damaged, from the sound of things. You definitely want to do all you can to remove the gel, because on the off chance that everything is still functional, the heat from running your laptop might melt it and cause it to spread and actually damage things. As to how you'd go about doing that, I have no idea, that's not exactly something I've ever spilled on a laptop

Look into new parts, but I wouldn't purchase any until you can confirm what is working and what isn't. Worst case scenario, it might be cheaper to just purchase a new laptop depending on what you'll need to replace. The SSD should be fine if the liquid didn't reach it, so that's some small consolation.
