Can't Get Dolby digital 5.1 via optical PC?

I'm having trouble getting my PC to output Dolby digital 5.1 audio to my speakers. I have a set of Logitech z5500s and I have them hooked up to my PC via optical audio cable.

When I play a game from steam my speaker's receiver say "Pro Logic movie" which as far as I know isn't true 5.1. I know my motherboard is capable of 5.1 digital as I can test it in control panel and the digital test works just fine. Also when I have them hooked up in the same format (ie. same cable same speakers)to my playstation I get dolby 5.1

Hopefully someone can help me with this. I'm also using the Realtek hd audio Manager.

Not sure if this is the correct section. Let me know if you need anymore info.

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage audio devices (under Sound tab) > right click Realtek Digital Ouput(Optical) > Properties > Advanced tab

In the Default Format, select DTS Interactive (5.1 Surround)

Thanks for the reply. It isn't giving me that option, I'm only getting various options for two channel-studio and dvd quality. My motherboard is a P8Z77-VLX according to the manual it supports 8.1 channels.

Any ideas why this would be happening?

I'm having the same problem.. only different pcm stereo options for default.. but when I test Dolby digital as a codec it works.. my mobo is an Asrock h87m itx, supposed to have 7.1..

I noticed this too I have a newer Asus mobo. It happened all of the sudden like a windows update hit and I lost dolby digital 5.1. I game with my pc all of the time and have it hooked up to my ht receiver.

So, in my case it was the player settings.
On VLC/MPC/winamp i had to go and enable the ac3 and/or dolbi digital encoding
I realised after reading on the net that in order to get the sound on the SPDIF you need to actually encode it first as such (on HDMI it is easier, "unencoded"). So you have to instruct the player to do so. Maybe the proper way is to have the soundcard software to do the encoding instead of the media player, but alas, it works for me now..

hallow guys i hope you are great. if you havent got the answer. first you have to have the media that has dolby. means if its an mkv or Avi or mp4. it has to has 5.1 channel audio for you to get it. another factor is the player you use. theonly one i know cando that is VLC. i use asus motherboard with 8.1 but configured it for 5.1. you need the proper driver for your soundcard. as well. andyjk116@gmail.com for more help
