Hi, I recently acquired a HP Probook 4270s. It's running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and Intel® Core™ i5-460M Processor.

A few days ago the laptop just shut off by itself. It was very hot to the touch. The fan appears to be blowing out very hot air. So, I took the laptop apart, blew out the dust and made sure the fan was spinning. Everything seemed to be in working order. I've also reduced my Processor Power Management settings.

Still being worried the laptop might shut down again.. I downloaded a few programs to monitor the temperature. This is where I have the question...

Under Max temperature for one of my cores is 70°C. But for the minimum temperature 61°C. My average temperature ranges about 65°C or so. Now is this running hot or is this running cool? There is only a 9 degrees difference in it being the minimum temperature it should be and the max. So it's really hard for me to gauge...

It's the same for my second core as well. It shows the max temperature is 72°C and the minimum is 65°C.

What worries me is, for some reason this HP Probook doesn't appear to have any intake vents. The bottom is completely solid. And I don't see any vents located anywhere else. The only "opening" is what I believe is called the exhaust.. where the hot air is blowing out. So I'm not even sure how it keeps cool at all.

I will buy a new fan for it if I need it. I don't believe I can get a cooling pad because there doesnt appear to be any vents. I've considered drilling holes in the bottom if need be.. And to top it off, I'm not even sure if it's running hot at all anymore after cleaning it because the difference between 61°C and 70°C max is so slight. I'd appreciate any help!

The only problem is it turned off a few days ago because it was too hot. So it has me baffled on what to do. The underside of the laptop gets extremely hot. Even too hot to touch.

Intel's max temp is 105. The laptop has its own temp cutoff point that can be changed in the bios. Dont change that though.
Too hot to touch doesnt sound right. Maybe try reseating your heatsink with fresh thermal paste and see if it helps. Before you take apart any hardware, wait for someone who knows more than me for more suggestions

You also say 'recently acquired'. If its still under warranty, complain about overheating and see if they can replace it for you.

Well, since taking it apart, blowing out the dust, and reducing the processor power management settings it has cooled down dramatically. Still is noticeably warm to hot to the touch, with equally noticeable hot air blowing out. The lack of apparent air intake really has me wondering how itself cools at all.

And It most likely is not under warranty, as I got it from a family member. But as I said, everything is in working order.. it's just once it turned off and I noticed how hot it was, I got a little concerned. Especially because all I was doing was browsing the web at the time. Had no games or any serious programs running.

I'll wait for more suggestions then, but I appreciate your help.
