Nothing is future proof. Its a nice laptop but unless you have a specific need for mobile gaming, building a desktop will ALWAYS be a better bang for your buck by a longshot.

Buyer's remorse and technology go hand in hand. There is always something newer, faster, etc just around the corner.

This is a beastly rig (by laptop standards), you should be fine for 2-3 years, easy. I still use an Alienware M15X (with Radeon 5850m 1GB) to game with. I have had for 3+ years and it still holds up well.

Actually, I am little more than a highly educated, knuckle-dragger, of average intellect that has a sense of humor (the key to true success).

1. That is a seriously powerful laptop! You'll be just fine for several years if you can resist the temptation to look at newer models lol.

2. You should be able to run most games at your highest resolution (1080p) for a long time, maybe needing to lower or turn off some of the more taxing settings as time goes on. Keep in mind that ULTRA settings are overrated, getting a steady FPS is way more important. Besides, on a 15.6" screen, you will hardly notice a difference when some features are disabled.

3. Some say the 970m will be more energy efficient and more powerful, it's hard to say until it's actually out and tested. Chances are, laptops with these new GPUs will come at a much steeper price.

4. Doubtful. GPUs in laptops are not really meant to be swapped out like desktop components. It probably isn't worth scratching or ruining the laptop to disassemble everything just to find out the GPU is permanently attached to the mobo. Unless you are very tech savvy, have excellent fine motor control, and a soft touch, I don't think this is really an option.

Final thoughts: If you are really worried about the laptop not lasting long, take extremely good care of it and sell it on ebay when a newer, better model comes out

The laptop you have is amazing. You should be able to play all the games that come out for a long time. For about 3 years on high to ultra. Then after that you should be able to run games at med for probably another 3 years. As for the new gpu's, They will improve battery life but that is not that important as you will be near a plug anyways. For performance, I don't think you will notice it that much as your rig is so high end.
