Hello! I've been having this problem for a while, and maybe one of you could help me solve it.
For over a year I've been playing games and using my laptop alright on my Nvidia GeForce 710M card (which comes with optimus and switches to Intel HD Graphics 4000) without any major problems.

However, for about a month, my Nvidia Card started stuttering in every program or feature that uses the graphics card. My FPS stay at 60 or the original value, but the game just keeps having mini-freezes. This doesn't only include games, though; videos I watch stutter, and even transparent displays lag my computer A LOT (like this http://i.imgur.com/J7D7x11.png). The stuttering doesn't really bother me in games that I run in 30 fps, but with games that I'm used to playing with 60 FPS it's unplayable.

However, this stuttering is not fully permanent. When I start my computer, for about 10 minutes the stuttering is gone, but when that time period ends it kicks in again. Sometimes, when I mess around with my drivers and card settings the stuttering dissapears for the whole session but comes back the next time I turn my computer on. And also, sometimes, while I'm playing a game, the stuttering stops for 10 seconds and then comes back in.

I've tried reinstalling my drivers, reinstalling my card, rolled back the drivers, but I can't find anything that permanently stops the stuttering. Can anyone help me? I'd really appreciate that.

Solution
Sounds like an overheating problem. Check to see if the GPU fan is still functioning and monitor the temps using a 3rd party tool like Precision X from EVGA, or MSI Afterburner. If that is not the issue, then you may have to RMA your video card for repair or replacement. I highly doubt the issue is related to switching to and from dedicated internal graphics. You could disable the internal graphics function in the BIOS and then run your tests just to be sure.

Thanks for the answer! I watched a couple videos and ran a low demanding game, and the stuttering was present on both. My GPU temperature has stayed around 59ºC

Try switching off integrated graphics in the BIOS and re-run the tests. Also, does your mobo have an auxilary power connector to provide additional power to the PCI-E and PCI slots? If so, verify that you have the appropriate power cable connected.

No, my laptop uses only 1 power cable.

I have tried to disable the onboard graphics card using the UEFI before, but I've always been unable to do so. My UEFI only has these options http://i.imgur.com/PCBhf1h.jpg and none of them allows me to enable or disable graphics cards.

Running perfectly.

As for the disabling the integrated graphics, my laptop seems to have most of the additional settings of the BIOS locked. And regardless, when I use the integrated graphics to watch videos, they don't stutter =(

Did you check the dedicated graphics card temperatures when gaming? Unusually high temperatures (above 80C) will be an immediate indicator of possible overheating issues. Make sure that your laptop vents are clear and don't have built up dust in them. You will want to use some canned to blow them out if necessary. And ensure to have the laptop on a hard surface whenever in use. Believe it or not, a lot of people still put their laptops on their bed or on a carpet floor, effectively starving it of fresh cool air. Let me know what you find!

go into your power options then under the advanced settings and put your max CPU at 99% on battery and plugged in. the intel stream has a problem with the nvidia chip. i thought my GPU was fried until i did this. the intel CPU turbo causes this for me

uninstall nvidia hd audio driver from "add remove programs" or "uninstall programs". that will fix the stuttering issue on nvidia cards. if not then uninstall everything nvidia from "add remove programs" then install reinstall. doesn't matter if you have the latest drivers currently installed or not. uninstall everything nvidia then reinstall.

i had the same issue and it turns out my lag was coming from the nvidia hd audio driver, i keep running into this issue but all i gotta do is uninstall nvidia hd audio driver.

try it, you have nothing to lose, i bet you it will fix your issue.

This worked for me. To make things clearer, this is exactly what I changed:

I went to control panel > power options > change advanced power settings > processor power management > maximum processor state > changed both "on battery" and "plugged in" from 100% to 99%.

This solved my problem. Running windows 7 64-bit on a lenovo Y580 with a 660M nvidia and an intel HD 4000.

Hi there !

I've got the same problem. GTX 870m on a MSI laptop (GS70 Stealth pro), and both of your solutions don't work for me...
I uninstalled NVIDIA audio drivers from the device manager, and my power plan says my processor is running at 100%...

Anyone else have a idea ?
Thanks !

Hey buddy, i had the exact same problem and i was suffering from it for the past 1 year. i was nearly about to break my laptop lol. I formatted my system several time and reinstalling update drivers bt just to find the problem still there. Last night i decided to change every setting in my Laptop and btw in own a HP Envy 15 K203TX, having and i7 5th gen intel 5500U processor, it has 8 gigs of RAM and 4 gigs of Nvidia 850M ddr3 graphics, running windows 8.1.

For HP users specifically there is an Application called HP COOLSENSE that comes bundled with the laptop. This software was the cause of my problem and many of u might have such pre-installed software on ur Laptop or PC. You can alternately try and uninstall all the bloatware that comes with the Laptop and check if the problem still persists. usually the bloatware cause an interruption when the laptop is being used for gaming or other application having heavy usage. You can read about what HP coolsense does in laptop or what a similar software does to your PC. Now im enjoying buttery smooth gaming experience in any game i play. Hope this help you out as i know how it fells to have a expensive media device that cant run any games. Gud luck and thanks for patiently reading it.

Sorry for my bad english and i did my best to explain the problem.

im having the same issue, intel 5820 and gtx 970 system temps dont appear high. I think this basically means i have too many brownser windows open? idk. Id like a solution to this problem as well, i dont want to re-install nvidia drivers what a pain. however the guy did say it was nvidia audio? im using onboard audio so.... i guess there is no audio issue for me, idk. something is obviously using too many system resources. I dont know what.
