I just connected my sound bar to my tv directly using an optical cable. It works great when using netflix on my smart tv. When I turn my cable box on, I get no sound from the sound bar or the tv. Shouldn't anything connected to the tv produce sound through the sound bar? Please help.

This depends on if the optical is from the TV or the DirectTV box.

If it is the DirectTV box, chances are only it will send sound.

If your TV has an audio out(even a headphone jack if the sound bar has RCA plugs. it will only be 2 channel, but these sound bars tend to be ok for that anyway), try to connect that the the sound bar.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that the tv is connected directly to the sound bar. I have an optical connection on my tv. Again, it works great with the smart tv features, but no sound when watching cable through the cable box. The cable box is connected to the tv through HDMI.

It's a samsung 60" LED. I just bought it. It's sending audio, because the sound bar works when using the smart tv apps like netflix. But when I am watching tv, through the cable box, there is no sound from the sound bar or from the internal speakers of the tv. Any other ideas?

I do not have any ideas. I could see a lack of sound on the bar because the copy protection may be a pain.

Please try with the sound bar fully disconnected to see if the TV will at least play sound.

If you can post the exact model number of both parts(TV and sound bar), I may be able to get a better idea of exactly what you are seeing.
