Hi.

My TV recently died, and I purchased a new one, which supports the same resolutions. I plugged it in and I have a black screen, with my cursor after windows loads up.

I have Windows 8.1. I've tried almost everything. Every combination of reboot/plugging/unplugging the HDMI. I can't reboot in safe mode because my ASUS motherboard UEFI BIOS doesn't support it. I've looked through every keyword-relating thread on MANY forums and no solution works. I have tried plugging in several 20ish " monitors and the same thing happens, I tried dual-screening and nothing happens, I've tried every boot up 'F' key I can find, but none override the ASUS BIOS.

I have no idea what to do, anyone have any experience/ ideas regarding the problem?

Will the laptop boot up normally with no external displays attached?

What makes you think that? I've never heard of/seen a board's firmware not support Safe Mode.

Same question. Does the internal display give you more than a black screen with a cursor?

I was reading on previous forums ASUS UEFI BIOS cannot start in safe mode.

Sorry I forgot to mention, it's a PC.

Safe Mode and UEFI/BIOS (the firmware) are independent of each other. I'm not sure who said that and whether there is an ounce of truth to it (I doubt it) or not.

It sounds like there's an issue with your Windows installation. A cursor and nothing else usually entails that Windows has started, but cannot load the user profile(s). If you can start Safe Mode after all, great! That might allow you to troubleshoot. If not, you will at least need a Windows DVD or a system repair disc. The latter will allow you to run the start up repair. The former does too, as well as give you the option of reinstalling Windows as a last resort.

P.S. If you meant that this is a tower rather than a laptop, this is in the wrong-ish forum. You can also try posting your issue in the Windows forum on Tom's. :)
