Hey guys,

Ive been looking into a new gaming laptop for quite some time, and all the grueling has resulted in these three choices. My parents said if I get all A's in school (which im well on the way of achieving) I get a laptop with an overall budget of 2000$. That means peripherals, backpacks, SSDs and such have to fit under the budget. I can pay an extra 50 or so dollars if its slightly over, but nothing over 100 dollars more would be ideal. Im going to be carrying it around school, which is why I didnt decide on any of those behemoth Asus g750s. Here are the laptops I have narrowed it down to:

1. MSI GS60 GHOST ($1699)
- Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4 GHz
-16 GB DDR3L SDRAM
-1 TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive, 128 GB Solid-State Drive
-NVIDIA Geforce GTX860M with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM
-15.6 inch Matte IPS display (1920 x 1080)

This is clearly the highest end of the three choices, and im willing to make sacrifices in my budget if its THAT much better than the other ones. My main concern about this laptop is the heating, battery life, and overall lifespan. Ive read on various threads that the overheating is quite an issue, but guys like LinusTechTips seem to think the heating is generally fine. If I went for this option, I would buy a cooling pad along with it, which is said to lower the temperature by 5-10 degrees F. I have no concern in terms of performance, as most reviews seem to say its powerful enough to run on decently high settings.

As we all know, with hot internals comes wearing of parts, and an overall shorter lifespan for the laptop. If any of you keep up to date with the latest computer news, you'll know that ASUS and Gigabyte are working on consumer grade External GPUs. Since the internal GPU in the ghost will be the main culprit of overheating and overheating is the main culprit of its short lifespan, do you think an external GPU would increase the overall lifespan of the laptop entirely? Also, If i get the Ghost I wont have to purchase SSD, because it comes equipped with a 128 GB one in addition to the 750GB 7200RPM HDD.

2. Asus ROG G550JK (about $1100 or so)
-Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5 GHz
-8GB DDR3L RAM
-750GB 7200RPM Hard drive
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M with 2GB GDDR3 VRAM
-15.6 inch 1920 x 1080 Matte IPS display

This is where I will have to make a few sacrifices for the lower price. Since it only has one mSATA slot and its filled with the Hard Drive, I will have to buy quite an expensive SSD if I want any manageable amount of storage. (I cant deal with only 500 GB alone) I would eventually purchase an ext GPU to greaten the lifespan and allow for more graphically intensive games. What do you guys think about the lifespan in comparison to the Ghost? It is a little thicker, and its seems to have much better cooling than the MSI, so a cooling pad wont be necessary, and the lifespan might be a little longer due to less extreme temperatures. I just need to know if this will give me a longer lasting experience than the Ghost.

Also, I cant seem to find anywhere to buy it, as Newegg has it out of stock and amazon doesnt even have it. Does anyone know where I could get it? I could also go with the N550JK, its non-ROG cousin, which is about $1099 with similar specs.

3. Lenovo Y50 ($1150)
-Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4 GHz
-8 GB DDR3 RAM
-1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive; 8 GB Solid-State Drive
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860m with 2GB GDDR3 VRAM
-15.6 inch 1920 x 1080 Glossy TN display

Ive seen quite a few complaints about the model's display, but I saw it at a store and can confirm that its not THAT bad, despite not being in the same league as the MSI's display. I believe it cools better than the Ghost, but not a well as the g550JK, and its the only one of the three without an aluminum chassis. What are your experiences with this one? Do you think it has a better overall lifespan than the Ghost or G550JK?

My final question is, which one of these do you think would be the best choice given my budget and needs? I will be playing games like Crysis on these laptops, but will be almost always plugged in when gaming. The most important question is, which will last longer out of the three? Thank you in advance for your feedback, and I look forward to reading your answers

Before going deeper into an opinion, I am wondering: Can you link us to the external GPU you are looking, the news as from what I understand from your post it's not out yet? and to what port you'd/you'll plug it in to?

Thats the ASUS one

Thats the Gigabyte one.
Obviously these are both in alpha stages and are being tested, but they should be ready soon

Cool, Just as I hoped they work under thunderbolt, have you researched if these laptops have thunderbolt port(s)? I'd get the lightest laptop if I were 100% sure those external GPUs will work as expected and will be out soon. I recommend the y50 as the 860m provides enough power even without an external GPU, it's 1050$, it's well built and very light and the egpu will provide extra power for when you're at home. The screen could be a problem though.

Yes, all three models have thunderbolt it seems. The MSI is the lightest, so do you think that is the best option? It also comes with an 860m and SSD+HDD
