if i have headphones that normally use a 1/4 audio jack, and i put an adapter to 1/8th on it and plug it into my computer, will the sound be degraded or hurt in any way?

Solution
The only real difference between 1/8 and 1/4 is that 1/4 is mechanically tougher simply from being bigger. Electrically, as long as contact surfaces are clean and contact force is adequate, they are exactly the same.

agreed. 1/4 and 1/8 jacks are the same.

high end headphones typically come with 1/4 jacks since this is the standard on things like amplifiers and other pro audio devices.

if you want to be technical there may be some advantage for headphones which require lots of power to drive but 99.99% of the time you wouldnt be able to tell them apart. the 1/4 jack is also more robust and is not prone to breaking.
