Thoughts on barebone books?

I was just interested in purchasing a barebone system to play around with. I've been searching high and wide for MSI whitebooks but I can't find any that are sold directly to the end-user that aren't used on ebay. Anyone know any other sites or places where I can find some? I guess its sort of like a budget laptop build but I really just want a laptop I built from the ground up myself. Plus not to mention I got DDR3 SODIMMs laying around and a few 2.5" drives so I thought why not. I'm not afraid to get down and dirty at all and consider myself quite handy.

Any advice is appreciated

Xotic PC sells babrbones but barebone laptops are different from desktops. Basically barebone laptops are made by the ODM's in China and Taiwan companies like (clevo, ASUS and MSI). Laptops don't have standardized sizes like Desktops. Cases are all different shapes and sizes so the mobo is specific to the case. They may or maynot have the graphics card. Clevo is an ODM and they make unbranded barebones where you can add memory, processor, HD or SSD. Clevo also sells branded laptops to Sager and you can go online and configure the components from a list. MSI and ASUS are used to be totally barbones but have moves inot selling their own brand laptops in the last 5 to 10 years. They did it as result of price wars in thew mid 2000's.

I looked at xotics page actually but their barebone section for laptops was empty :(

I mostly want an OEM laptop that includes everything except: storage, RAM, CPU and an OS. Although I do hear vendors can slash the prices by 25% for the CPUs compared to the tray costs but they usually make up that cost by still charging full price anyway for profit. I don't even know where to buy mobile GPUs.

Well the OEM's are all in China and Taiwan and are basically wholesale part of the chain and don't sell to the consumer. The retail units basically need to add components to be profitable. I own an Alienware and I can purchase graphic cards through Dell (Alienware).
