The power port was damaged. I bought a new motherboard transferred the fan and heatsink to the new MB keeping the old thermal pads. At the time of failure the battery was drained to zero.
With the charger connected and battery removed it never shuts off.
With the battery installed and charger connected, it goes about 5 minutes till sudden shutdown.
On battery only it will experience sudden shutdowns but they are rare.
Is it overheating? battery issue? or what.

Solution
It's fixed. I apologize to all those who tried to help me as I made a silly blunder. On this laptop there are two thermal pads under the heatsink that is attached to the fan. One is for the GPU and the other for the CPU. I purchased a replacement palmrest for the computer to replace the cracked original and installed it. Later I read in searching for a solution that there were apparently 3 thermal pads on the 1005HAB. Out of desperation I looked at my old palmrest and, there, on the underside was a thermal pad. On the Ebay replacement, it arrived with that pad removed. This third pad fits between the palmrest and the top of the MB and dissipates heat from a third (unknown chip). I installed a thermal pad and it now runs 20 degrees...

update:
It is operating on xp sp3. I also did a charger jack repair on the old MB and that did not help. I also removed the old thermal pads (bad shape) and tried using a thermal paste (didn't end the problem). I bought and installed some new thermal pads from Frozen CPU and this did not end the problem. I purchased and installed a new battery, I purchased and installed a new charger. I removed the wifi board and it ran all night. I reinstalled a used wifi card and when playing youtube videos it will run for awhile and shutdown again. I also did a full shutdown; remove battery, charger and pushed the strart button for 20 secs. No change the problem is still there. The fan works well and has been cleaned as well as the vents. I bought new feet for the laptop as the originals were missing and thought this would aid the cooling. I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

Since my last update. I changed out the thermal pads (on CPU and GPU). I installed a temperature monitoring program and a new fan from Amazon. I then put a loud video on from Youtube to place demand on the system. It showed that my CPU ran at about 70 deg which is not a problem but my GPU ranged from 80-94 deg. I believe shutdown happens at 95 deg. Clearly I am shutting down from an overheating GPU. This seems to be a design flaw in these early seashell eee netbooks. I own an almost identical !005 Pu-17 and temperature of the GPU is some 20 degrees below the shutdown temp under the same conditions. If I have a fully charged battery on my 1005HAB and with or without the charger connected it takes time to shut down but always does. It is faster with a partly of fully discharged battery on the charger.
It is my belief that the 1005HAB is simply a bad design and overheating is a common issue but Asus does not want to admit it. It is meant for light duty work not intensive work as it operates too close to shutdown temperatures.
