How about this one, it is extremely light so you can carry him all day long, it has an i7 processor and battery is quite nice. If you don't do any heavy stuff it should work for 5-6 hrs (make sure you lower screen brightness)
You can get one more 4GB DDR3 RAM stick
And also I would install 8.1 windows

I would go with the asus transformer book t100. It should enough for the basic tasks. If you need a bigger screen then choose on of their x series laptops like the one Proofy said but I would stay away from 8.1. For some reason it doesn't like me so I stuck with win 8.
