I'm helping a friend choose a laptop and I've pretty much narrowed it down to either Acer Aspire V3-772G-5413 or Lenovo Y40. Are these good for his needs, or is there something better for his money?

In that price range, the Acer Aspire V3-772G-5413 is the best you can find for your gaming needs. The processor is decent and the GPU is unbelievable for $800. The Y40's AMD Radeon R9 M275 2GB performs worse than the 850M (But not by big margin).

The Acer would be a great choice. :)

Let me know if you have any questions!

Those are actually the two best models you can get for 800$, I'd recommend the acer.
