Some laptops are upgradeable, most require replacement of the whole motherboard. In most cases, the upgrade is usually not worth the cost or the trouble.

If you can tell me what your specific laptop model is, I can tell you what your options are. It's usually on a data plate or sticker on the bottom of the case, but may be inside the battery bay.

5742 is the series number - the specific model number should the series number followed by a dash and four more numbers, i.e. 5742-xxxx

Well, the good news is that you can upgrade your CPU with relative ease! The bad news is that the top upgrade you can get is the i5-580M, which will net you an overall performance increase of a whopping 3%...in some applications. Less in others.

My recommendation would be to replace the laptop.

IF you're budget is $400 and you need more CPU power, wait and save more money. Almost all laptops under $400 have Celeron and Pentium low-power CPUs that won't be as powerful as your current model. Unless the laptop is broken, it's a pointless upgrade. There are a couple of laptops out there with the i5 4200M processors, they are around $500-$600. They will be a noticeable upgrade

Can you link me to some sites you can buy from? I've had no luck finding any good UK sites.
