im looking for some good headphones under 200$ that have good sound. i know pretty much nothing about sound, so please help me out guys. i want ones that have like 7.1 surround sound. and good quality bass as well. dont have to be noise cancelling though. can go over 200 a little bit

"headphones" or "headset" ?

also is virtual surround okay or do they need to be true 7.1? most gaming headsets are virtual.

i would suggest studio headphones myself but i'd need to know what kind of sound profile you liked. for ideas use the forum search for "ssddx headphone headset" and read some of my responses to other posts for ideas.

If you can find them in your price range, I would definitely look into the Sennheiser PC360 (or G4ME ONE) or PC350 (G4ME ZERO). I have heard the PC350 doesn't sound quite as good (but that could be personal preference) as the PC360 and I know that they require a headphone amp. You can match it with a sound card like the ASUS Xonar DGX.

I, personally, have the PC360 and Xonar DGX and they sound great. They are about as good as gaming headsets get. The sound card can simulate surround sound if you choose to use that as well.

Another option you have is getting a good pair of headphones instead. They are generally going to sound better than a headset that costs the same amount of money. If a mic isn't a necessity, then I would definitely consider this option. A modmic can always be added later on if you choose. I would still recommend getting a headset if you use the mic all the time.

like i said i dont really know the diference between headphones and headset. just the over-ear ones that dont have a mic. not sure about this virtual and true 7.1... thanks though

did you read through past responses of mine?
http://www.tomshardware.com/s/ssddx+headphone+headset/

read through some and get an idea for what i've said about various models. it may help your selection process.

if you have any specific questions you can post them here.

virtual surround is "software faked surround sound". basically instead of headphones having multiple drivers (speakers) in the earcups they have just one in each ear and use software to make it sound like its surround sound. this is how most gaming headsets work. the nice thing is that its possible to use this same technology on better grade headphones as well. true surround sound headsets have multiple drivers per ear and do not use software to fake sound. generally there isnt a huge difference between the two in sound quality but the software based can have a little bit of sound distortion to it.

@ssddx: Sorry for taking this off but I'm also looking for a headset which is not only good for gaming but equally good for music/movies as I'm into all of them. Can you help? Is kingston hyper x cloud really that much good as being portraied?

@easylover, please start your own thread on the issue instead of hijacking this one. the hyper x cloud is a good headset but is by no means perfect and is overhyped just like any popular product. gaming headsets tend to be better suited to gaming and often do not make the most ideal music and movie listening headphones but can certainly be used if you wanted. if you had a larger budget it may be beneficial to get a pair of headphones and a boom mic. if you wanted a headset specifically though i'd suggest taking a look at the models from sennheiser in the $120 range or so. they are known for excellent audio quality and decent sound quality.
