Hi everybody,

I am looking for advice on what laptop to purchase for my job, school work and leisure time.

For my work, I am an IT and Web Support Specialist for a local store. In my daily work, I code application software in both Eclipse and in Xcode. I also create HTML e-mails and update the website periodically.

For my school work, I am obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science with a duel emphasis in database administration and software development. I often use Microsoft Visual Studio and NetBeans. I will also be learning more about Linux and setting up network servers in my next semester, do a laptop that can handle virtualization or dual-booting will be necessary.

In my leisure time, I enjoy watching YouTube and Twitch streams, playing League of Legends and soon, The Sims 4. I often edit photos for family members and update websites for them using Photoshop and Dreamweaver, respectively.

Overall, I'm looking for a laptop that I can travel with, get what needs to be done quickly, yet still relax with it.

One conflict I realize is that Xcode is Mac only, and Microsoft Visual Studio is Windows only. So I realize I will need to run either Parallels with a MacBook or VMWare with a Windows PC.

My budget is around $1,500 and I can push it maybe 100-200 dollars more with some begging and pleading. So hopefully someone can help me out. Thanks!

Items 5 and 6 are mutually exclusive......powerful laptops have shorter battery life.

One thing I gotta say about Macs is they last. Send two kids away to college .... In 2008, oldest went to Flight School with a $2,200 lappie which was configured to run Flight Sims .... (same specs as high end gaming laptop).....lasted just under 3 years .... In 2009, 2nd oldest left with a Mac, he still uses it.

I use Intel / Windows platform as that's where the engineering software runs .... For myself, as well as for your needs, I would recommend having a laptop custom built to fit your needs.

That's before discounts

http://www.lpc-digital.com/notebook-review-members-military-and-student-discounts.html

You can usually save money buying the OS on Campus.....all the + $ things are upgrades, that you can cut out if need to save more.... but discounts are usually triggered by passing s certain price level .... i.e. $1,350, $1,500 whatever so sometimes saving $50 can cost ya $100.

Never heard of Clevo ? You probably never heard of the companies who actually build the brands you are familiar with..... Dell, Lenovo, Sony, HP, Acer, Apple, Toshiba, etc..... none actually "make" a laptop.

The vast majority of laptops on the market are manufactured by a small handful of Taiwan-based Original Design Manufacturers (ODM), although their production bases are located mostly in mainland China. Major relationships include:

Quanta sells to (among others) HP, Lenovo, Apple, Acer, Toshiba, Dell, Sony, Fujitsu and NEC
Compal sells to (among others) Acer, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo and HP/Compaq
Wistron (former manufacturing & design division of Acer) sells to Dell, Acer, Lenovo and HP
Inventec sells to Toshiba, HP and Lenovo
Pegatron sells to Asus, Toshiba, Apple, Dell and Acer
Foxconn sells to Asus, Dell, HP and Apple
Flextronics (former Arima Computer Corporation notebook division) sells to HP

CLEVO is a large Taiwanese computer company specializing in laptops. While the Clevo brand name is perhaps not widely known, their products are re-branded and sold by known boutique brand OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)… notably Sager, VoodooPC, Falcon Northwest, Eurocom, etc. They are also considered (by whoever knows about notebooks) to design and manufacturer the best of the best notebooks in terms of superior build quality and innovative designs.
