Chromebook, tablet or classic notebook?

I need a small form factor computer for my studies.

My guiding light here is price, because I'm aware of the superior products in the higher bracket. For instance the Macbook Air 11" (though I'm not a Mac guy). But its cheapest variant on sale here goes for CHF850. I know I can find computers in the chromebook and tablet categories for 1/3rd that price. But essentially the Air has everything I want: small form factor, light weight, SSD for faster computing and longer battery life.

My question: for study purposes, would anyone recommend a tablet over a chromebook, or should I forget all that and look for a suitable notebook running Win7? (I think 7" is too small and 13" a bit big since I have to commute by bike daily).

The main advantage of the chromebooks seems to be price, yet I can find tablets for cheaper or tablet+keyboard combos in the same price range. I have no real experience using either.

In that case I might go for the Asus Transformer series of tablets. They seem to have several models and with either Windows or Android. You think Windows 8 is a better choice? I've never used the new OS before.
