Is Pioneer Model SX-217 receiver compatible with Samsung Sony Philips digital interface? I can't get surround sound to work.

Solution
Many receivers require you to assign a rear panel connection to an input (such digital 1 to TV),
Usually there is an input set up menu to do this. In older receivers there is a front panel switch.

I'm illiterate when it comes to electronics. I have a toslink opitical cable running from the TV to the receiver & the TV is set for PCM ( The TV won't allow me to go to Dolby Digital) On the e-manual they talk about SPDIF (Sony Philips Digital Interface) Do I have to have any cables other than the optical to make surround sound work?

make sure your receiver is set to optical digital input. I would try the coax rather than optical, optical cables are easily damaged. You can just use a standart RCA cable (any of the standard red/white/yellow audio/video cables) as a coax digital cable.

i have a pioneer receiver and the digital is allocated to "TV" and digital 2 to "sat". You should be able to change this in the setup menu. Read your user manual.

By switching my receiver to CD the surround sound works, apparently the optical digital output must be tied that. The bottom line is it's working. Thank you all for bearing with me. This is the best site for solving issues that I have found.
