I have been looking at segar laptops at exotic pc and found them reasonably priced for what they offer how is the build quality i.e key board, case ? How do they compare to MSI or Gigabyte?

Solution

The GPU (graphics processor) is what adds the most cost to the more expensive laptops.

It's also generally not only a complete waste of money for non-gamers but also adds to the noise and weight of the laptop as well.

I suggest a quality laptop (good customer feedback) with an INTEL 4th gen CPU that has FOUR CORES. Something like these specs:
a) Asus, Lenovo, HP etc (good customer feedback for exact...

Sagers and Many Exotic laptops use base model Clevo's. These guys add screens, cpu's, ram, drives... to finish off the build to your order.

I consider Clevo's to be the Mercedes Benz of Laptops. You can pay a bit more but do you really get any value out that extra money compared to, say, an MSI gaming Laptop?

I've been impressed with Lenovo.

This one is $1050 (GTX860M graphics): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834317541&leaderboard=1

Lenovo has 4K (3840x2160) screens as well but I'd research that carefully if considering. If the computer did have a 4K screen I'd run the desktop at that res (DPI scaling at 40%), scale web browsers... but I'd game mostly at 1920x1080 or for games that look a lot better like Civ5, Starcraft 2 etc I'd game at 2560x1440 but not 4K.

I was comparing the MSI GP60 Leopard-009 to a SAGER NP4658, I'm actually looking for my daughter who is not a big gamer but she is in high school heading for college and I want to get her something to handle her school needs plus videos, pictures, I use asus myself and have 3 but compared to those two you get more for your buck..

b) 15.6" or 17" ? (screen size versus portability. Consider a 15.6" first for portability; you can add a second desktop monitor as well for more screen real estate in her room).

c) 1600x900 or 1920x1080 resolution
d) 4GB minimum System RAM
e) SSD + HDD optimally (Windows on SSD, and a second HDD or a bay you can add a drive too)

f) Warranty?
g) Intel 4-core 4th gen CPU
h) Graphics-> iGPU in the CPU
i) anti-gloss screen (not glossy)

j) Windows 8.1 64-bit (but get START8 for $5)

*The 4-th generation Intel CPU's are very power efficient compared to AMD and the iGPU is "good enough" for non gamers.

**Get a program like Acronis True Image to make backup images of the Windows drive to a secondary drive (either built in or USB).

$400 laptop:
This is not an expensive laptop, but it is an example of an inexpensive one with good customer feedback that may serve her needs adequately: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i5-4gb-memory-500gb-hard-drive-dark-gray-blue-gray/6643023.p?id=1219229364828&skuId=6643023&st=categoryid$pcmcat247400050000&cp=1&lp=15

Again, I've listed all the main specs in my post just above.

This one is $400 and is not a 4-core but is a dual-core with hyper-threading, and is only 1366x768. Just using as a reference.

Thanks for the feedback..I'm on my 3rd asus which I had for 6yrs now with a centrino duo and it's solid so i was looking at the asus and lenovo , but with these the i5 is common and i couldn't find comparisions to my centrino duo core so I could base line the i5, I'm figuring it can out perform my system.. What do you mean by get START8 for $5 ? I have read people complaining about the lenovo screens also..

yeah for highschool entry college get a cheaper laptop instead of 1 expensive one. i would suggest Bestbuy because they have an 'accidental damage' extended warranty available that i suggest you get. it will add another ~150 to the price. this will leave you money to buy another one when she drops it again in her junior year. LoL
