I need to know how big the gap is between the graphics chip and the heatsink on dell latitude e5400?

i want to use copper shims instead of a thermal pad for the graphics chip but i need to know how thick the copper shims need to be to fill the gap

There should be no gap between the chip and the heatsink at all, the thermal paste goes on the chip, the heatsink goes directly on top of the paste. The point of the heat grease is to remove even those gaps that are not seen by the eye and to make as much of a contact between the chip and the heatsink as possible.

im talking about the graphics chip not the cpu the graphics chip is always a little offset which is why you have to use a thermal pad instead of paste to fill in the larger space

No chip would need a spacer to go between it and the heatsink, it will kill the heat transfer. You may need to use a different size heatsink to fit propebly but filling in spaces between a chip and heatsink like you would space between a brick is bad. I've replaced several video card heatsinks and all have had the same contact as a CPU.
