Repurposing Old Laptop

Im open to any suggestions as to what you might do with an old laptop. Currently i like the idea of turning it into a torrent or download laptop where i can transfer the files to my better desktop. Only I havent really torrented much and dont really know the best way to do something like that. Also I was thinking about running a different OS on it since right now it has a cracked win 7 prof on it, but i keep getting the pop-up saying its non genuine software. But im not really sure, because I might need the laptop to be able to take notes in college, in which case i might prefer to have word instead of libre office. But yeah anyway, the only need i have for the laptop is portable note taking and such, besides that everything i do at home is run through my desktop. The laptop is a toshiba satellite L455-S5989. Again im open to any suggestions to what you might do with a spare computer.

Well i had a genuine copy of windows, but i accidently ruined it when i was going through folders trying to make everything neat. After that i put a linux distro on it then i thought i could get windows back with the product key on the bottom of the laptop but so far i havent had any luck verifying it. now i feel like i should switch back to linux and try repurposing it to a media server. Only i dont really know what im doing when it comes to this stuff.
