I've been looking around for a decent laptop that can handle uni and some gaming on the side. I came across this laptop and it seems to have everything I need.

- 15" diagonal HD LED-backlit Display (1366 x 768)
- 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4510U Processor (4M Cache, 2.0 up to 3.10 GHz)
- 8GB RAM
- 1TB Hard Drive
- NVIDIA GeForce 840M Graphics with 2GB Memory

I just wanted to know, is it worth buying considering it's usually $1000? Are Dell laptops in general good laptops? Some games I plan to play are League of Legends, Counter Strike, Heroes and Generals, and any games I find on Steam (most likely not AAA titles, more towards indie games). I'm not hoping for ultra high settings, but medium at most.

Thanks.

The GT 840m should be fine for most games @ 1366x768 resolution. You can checkout some benchmarks in the following link. Note that the benchmarks comes from many different laptops. Some laptops may have 4GB of RAM, others may have 8GB of RAM. The CPU using in the laptop can vary; it may be a dual core i5 or i7 "U" or "M" model. Or the CPU could be a quad core i7 "MQ" model.

I have a Dell Latitude 3540 which I bought refurbished earlier this year and I do not have any issues with it so far.

You'll ok with that laptop. The CPU is very strong and the GPU is ok for light gaming and both are low power hardware.

My actual laptop is a Dell is quite good, but the proprietary drivers are not that much, i had to replace them with the generic Intel ones to make it work better. The battery life is great, 7 hours for a Ci5-3210M (not U) on low power profile is not bad. The screen is quite shitty, i have to readjust angles to watch videos, it feels like an old LCD. It was a bit expensive for it's build quality and features, but i liked the 4xUSB3.0. I would qualify it as average.

Check the laptop you want to see if you like the features it has, apart from the hardware.
