I'm having remodeling done in my house and changing the basement to a home theater. I was thinking of a 4K TV, and read some reviews on it, namely one on cnet. Is it a good buy right now or should I wait?

that depends on if you have a use for it..

as of right now there is a serious lack of 4k content. even sony's service which they suggest pairing up with sony 4k televisions is limited to 80movies and 120 tv show episodes. this makes a 4k tv right now fairly impractical.

if you intened to use the tv for more than just movies such as hooked up to a computer for gaming or pc use then you just might have a real use for the extra resolution and may be able to hold out until 4k content is more commonplace which will likely take years.

in general... no, i would not consider 4k a good investment at this point in time for the average user. instead, buying a 1080p tv now then perhaps upgrading in 3-4 years when 4k content is actually available...

Great advice! Thanks! My comp setup is perfect and my only use for it right now is home movies. Looks like I'll hold out several more years.

They do that on purpose though, you walk into a store and they are playing that just released movie on the best TV and it looks indescribably good, and it is absolutely useless unless you are using it for a gaming computer with dope graphics and the best HD cable you can get, otherwise the graphic capability goes to waste.

Yup, the best way to test it if they allow is change the settings in the store or just take it home and test it. I hate returning stuff because we pay higher prices for jerks that buy and return all the time.

I managed a mid to high stereo/video store many years ago. Too many uninformed customers buying and didn't know what they were doing.
