Is macbook air a good laptop (core i7 512 gb 8gb ram version)

Solution
I bought mine last year with the intention of running dual boot, but i haven't found the need to yet. The main reason in buying was for: the battery life (12ish hours) that hasn't been matched by any windows ultrabooks, the unmatched trackpad and form factor, and a rock solid OS(not as many conflicts running preconfigured, limited hardware sets). There really isn't much of a premium price compared to other ultrabooks. I'd recommend saving almost 300 dollars and downgrading to the 256 GB ssd, because apple does like to charge an absurd amount for certain upgrades. Unless you need to keep ALL your music and movies on there, you just don't need the space for that price. Anyone that tells you they are more expensive are wrongly comparing...
The specs are good. However, Macbooks are basically more expensive than PC laptops because they do not have any direct competition. If you want to use a laptop with a Mac OS, then you have no choice other than to get a Macbook.

The question is do you need to use Mac OS?

Anyone that tells you they are more expensive are wrongly comparing them to a standard laptop. Compare it to other top ultrabooks with the same specs and you'll see it falls right in line with pricing. If it's just a tool you need for the cheapest price possible, you'll obviously find better elsewhere.

Be aware: Apple will be refreshing the MBA line-up shortly and most likely adding the Broadwell/Retina line soon after within the year.

As far as my opinion is concerned, I would recommend you Apple MacBook Pro MGXA2LL/A 15.4-Inch. It's one of the best MacBooks available nowadays. You get 2880*1800 screen resolution, incredible colors, Intel Core i7 2.2 GHz processor, 128 MB of embedded memory, ultrafast cache, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac compatibility features. I've been using it from quite long, and I must tell you that I really loved the Backlit Chiclet-style keyboard and the trackpad which is clickable designed. There's no mouse click button, thus it saves space. All you have to do is just tap one finger, tap twice to click and right click respectively. Its simply amazing :) You want more details? Go here and read the MacBook Pro MGXA2LL/A 15.4-Inch Review with detailed specifications.
