Laptop keeps overheating, never used to do this

My laptop is an Acer Aspire V3-772G, the GTX 760m variant.

Recently I've been having a lot of processor problems, including turning off due to overheating when gaming.

I've checked using Realtemp, idle is low 70's and gaming is high 80's, sometimes 90's..

It constantly underclocks itself to 800mhz when it heats up, and stays there, making games very hard to play. The laptop is always on a flat surface.

What could have caused this? I'm thinking of opening it and replaing the thermal paste as I have some spare Artic Silver. If anyone has a guide for this, please, let me know.

Here's a RealTemp picture, along with FRAPs. It shows the weird clock speed and temps I get.

Get a can of compressed air use the straw attachment and blow out every vented slot on the laptop ASAP.

If your in an environment where someone smokes then it will be worse because there will be buildup everywhere inside that compressed air just wont get rid of..

Even idle temps seem pretty high. Would opening it, clearing out any dust and smacking on some Artic Silver make things better? I could do that with some sort of guide for my laptop. I know how to open it to access things such as usb ports but have never dived into the motherboard area.

Well after about 2 hours of sweat and tears, I opened my laptop and investigated.

The fan wasn't clogged up with dust, however there was a tiny bit of dust off to the edge, so I doubt that would have hindered my cooling performance.

After removing the heatsink for the CPU and GPU I found the old paste was dry and crispy, not very effective...

I wiped the old paste off and applied some fresh Arctic Silver.

After losing a few screws in the process, I can gladly say that the temperatures have taken a noticeable drop!

Here's my new idle temps:

A great 15-20*C drop!

But, of course, we all wanna know what my new gaming temps are, and I'm blown away. Here's a Dota 2 screenshot with the same graphics settings and resolution;

Give or take the 20-30 fps alt tabbing takes away.

Amazing! Who knew applying new paste would be this effective?

Either Acer put some crappy cheap compound on or it just dried up.

Anyway, I'm glad to say my laptop is back to it's old self. Back to playin' Skyrim; Lag Free!
