Alright, so here is the situation. I upgraded my motherboard and CPU yesterday from an AMD asrock 970 extreme3 & FX-4100 to an Intel asrock Fatal1ty Z87 Killer & Pentium G3258. Before the hardware swap, I upgraded to Windows 8, because I was told that I could switch out my motherboard without having to reinstall the OS if I was on Windows 8. However, after the swap, I powered up my rig, and Windows would not boot! It kept saying it ran into a problem and had to restart, and now and then it would say it was trying to repair itself, which never worked. So, after a bit, I decided to install my old copy of Windows 7 OEM, which I was originally using, and which I am running on right now. I have 2 drives, a 90gb SSD for the OS, and a 1TB HDD for everything else. I still have all my stuff on the 1TB HDD, but the SSD was of course wiped in the install.

I previously made a backup of my system on an external hard drive using seagate discwizard, and I tried to use to the backup to restore Microsoft Office, which is the main thing I am worried about missing. However, after it restored and restarted, I couldn't boot to Windows, as it was giving me some error message about a hardware change. I am thinking this means that the restore would only work if I still had that old AMD setup, instead of my new Intel one. So, I was forced to install Windows 7 yet again, and that is where I am at now. I know my time is limited, as I cannot reactivate my OEM license. Basically, all I want to do is get Microsoft Office back, then I will just upgrade to Windows 8 again.

Ideas? Help? Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Just reinstall office 2010 from your install media using the original legit. product key that came with it. I just did the exact same thing; having to reinstall office 2010. I had no issues and the product is fully activated and working.

Wow, that actually worked for you? I guess I just wouldn't have expected it to work, using the same thing a second time. Well, hopefully I can track down the disc and key... thanks!

Hi

Is your Win 8 a retail upgrade or OEM copy you purchased (in either case licence is transferable)
However OEM Win 7 licence is tied to original motherboard and you have no rights to re activate on new motherboard
(you may be able to extend 30 days countdown by re arming Windows)

I haven't heard that moving a hard disk with Win 8 to a new motherboard is any easier than for Win 7

The main problem is the hard disk controller drivers cause a BSOD in Windows with the new motherboard unless there is a similar chipset on new motherboard or you follow process to uninstall all drivers from Programs & Features then remove old hard disk controller driver from registry before last shutdown in old PC.

link to report on how to do this

I have used the above method several times.

Others recomend Sysprep to uninstall all drivers from Windows on your hard disk.
There are commercial programs able to prepare Windows for transfer to new motherboard
(Acronis springs to mind)

I presume you still have CD & key for MS Office .
You are unlikely to be able to extract working copy of MS Office from a backup
The MS Office key could be found from the registry or a backup copy of the registry if you can t find it

If you moved the hard disk successfully Office would demand to be re activated.

best of luck
