I am currently slowly 'rigging' out my bedroom with my computer and tv. I know very very little about Audio (yes i know that's vague) however i am slowly trying to learn about audio as i am a bit of an audiophile. I am looking for a decent 2.1 or 2.0 speaker system that i can use on my pc and computer that sounds great and is not over $1000 CAD. I do not do audio editing i just love my music (i have all my audio 44.1 kHz flac). Any suggestions as to what speaker systems would be good for this also should i get a DAC for my pc or a receiver for both?

Solution
the harman kardon avr135 only has 40w per chanel output. this likely is not going to be enough for most decent bookshelf speakers which are typically about 100w

assuming you can get everything from amazon usa at our prices... you *could* go with something like this

$250 yamaha 5.1 receiver
http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V377-5-1-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B00HZE2WW8/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1405657156&sr=1-3&keywords=rx-373

$170 klipsch 350w subwoofer
http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-SW-350-8-Inch-Subwoofer-Black/dp/B002HWRK9I/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1405655938&sr=1-1&keywords=klipsch+sub+sw-350

$400/pair klipsch bookshelf speakers...
a few questions..

what size speakers do you need/want?
-satelites (good for small rooms, lack bass impact, are easy to hide and small)
-bookshelves (good for medium rooms, more bass impact, not so easy to hide but well rounded)
-floorstanders (good for medium or large rooms, significant bass impact, very large and conspicuous but powerfull)
-subwoofer (required for bass impact on satelite systems, optional on bookshelf or floorstander systems but does add more low end)

will you have more than one source?
-will you just be using the computer or will you need to add lets say a video game system, mp3 player, internet radio or other such alternate source to them?
-if yes do you need them to be hooked up at the same time or is swapping cables okay?

digital or analog sources?
-how will you be connecting? via hdmi, optical or 3.5mm?
-do you have a pc soundcard? list it
-do you have a video card? list it
-is using hdmi through a receiver to your tv or monitors okay with you or would you prefer not?

distance from pc?
-at a desk or do you sit back on a couch or chair?

---

generally a receiver is good if you have multiple sources and want to swap between them. they might not have the absolute best in class DAC or amps but generally good enough. receivers are also fairly priced and will run less than seperates.

if you already have a good soundcard to act as a DAC then you can use just an amplifier. this means more money put into speakers.

if you do not then you can get an external dac and also an amplifier to power speakers. however, between an amp and dac this could eat up half of your budget easy.

---

i personally use a receiver in my own setup (link on top right in my sig) which is a 5.1 satelite system using klispch speakers and a pioneer receiver. i use multiple input devices which makes it very convenient for me.

thank you for the reply! Im in a small-medium sized room and am looking to have the speakers just on my desk (7ft surface). I dont have yet but am going to get the Xonar DX 7.1 sound card. I will be seated at my pc however i will be about 10-12 feet away for my tv. I do not want to have to change cables, i just want to change inputs. I might have a receiver made by Harman Kardon i can use, its not working right now but i think i may be able to fix it. I would like to be able to easily attach laptops and other devices to the speakers as well. Lastly i have a Radeon hd7870 as my GPU. Sorry for answering the questions so randomly! I would also like to apologize for the many requests i am making. Thank you so much!

i would hold off on purchasing the soundcard... unless of course you are wanting to buy headphones as well (in which case you need to add that information here). if you went with a receiver you might not need to get a soundcard.

is your tv the main display for the pc? if so would it be an option to have bigger speakers up next to it instead of on your desk? or is your preference to *definitely* have the speakers on the desk?

a receiver would be pretty convenient for connecting up multiple other inputs like laptops/game devices. what model HK receiver? it may not be a good idea to use older tech in some cases (it should definitely have hdmi and/or optical and support the newest audio formats) however if you list it we can give you an idea whether its worthwhile or not.

what room dimensions?

also you did not mention what speaker size you liked.

do you plan on adding more speakers in the future?

what are your thoughts on going with a 3.0 or 3.1 instead (since the center channel handles quite a bit of vocals/dialog and may be of benefit perhaps. its optional but worth a thought.

what stores can you buy from which ship to canada for audio equipment? can you use amazon usa for example?

i do not plan to use headphones with my computer or tv. The tv is going to be used as a tv and a second monitor for watching movies however i will have a normal monitor hooked up to my computer for every day use. the receiver is an older one so there is no hdmi however there is 3 optical ports; its a Harman Kardon avr 135. For the size i would go no bigger than bookshelves as i do not have too much room for them. The room is about 12' by 13' so its not to large. Please note i do enjoy having a little bass behind my music. I can by the equipment from NCIX, Amazon.com or .ca, best buy, future shop, memory express, and other common stores.

you would of course need some speaker wire and whatever kind of connection you want to use to connect to your pc. you could use optical if you want or you could use hdmi if you used the passthrough to go to your monitor.

klipsch bookshelf speakers are quite excellent. ive heard them (not sure which exact models though) in person and they sound great. i personally own some klipsch satelites and i'm very happy with them (i didnt have the money to blow on a 5.0 setup of bookshelves or i would have!)

i have the larger 450w sub and its also excellent. my room is about 13x14 and its a bit oversized but i bought it for the same price as the 350 so i honestly cant complain. i think the 350 size would be fine for you.

the yamaha receiver is rated for 110w @ 8ohm so should be able to power those speakers perfectly fine. they make some pretty good equipment. my personal choice would be pioneer though since i own one and it has worked well. the pioneers however are more pricey which means getting lower quality speakers so i did not go that route.

---

there are of course many many alternatives to what i listed. if you wait around for awhile one of the others here may jump in with their thoughts on what they think are good.

if you cannot get the items i listed for the same price.. be sure to make mention of that.

i would also advise you to read reviews on the products i listed and make your own mind up about them and to not just take my word on it.
