it allows you to tell your GPU to do some extra stuff for you.
for starters, all that the GPU does is display fancy graphics.
but, if you use CUDA or openGL, you can tell it to solve your math homework. or do some physics. or anything that an army of small workers (cuda cores) can solve faster than a big one (your CPU)
