I am looking to buy a new computer. I don't really have too many requirements, but can't seem to find something that I like that I don't think is a rip off. I want a laptop meant for school and that is fine with moderate gaming. It will need to be able to run some of the more intense games (not necessarily on top graphics settings, but not minimum settings either). I want a 15.6" screen with an i5/i7 or AMD equivalent if there really is one. I want it to have a dedicated GPU, I am tired of my Intel HD graphics that I have in my current laptop. Don't care much for SSD, but I need a minimum of 750GB HDD space in total, would prefer 7200 rpm but I can live with 5400 rpm. I have my absolute limit of about $1000 but would rather have cheaper. I have found a few laptops within this range such as:

Any suggestions? (not limited to these choices by any means, in fact I would like assistance in finding laptops that I haven't found yet) I feel like these laptops are overpriced for what I get, but maybe that is just because I usually think of price in terms of desktop. Any suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated!

The Y50 is about as good as you're going to get with those specs if that's the price you're looking at.

If you're not looking to break the bank, this is also a great laptop for $700:

It's not going to game that heavily, but it's nice and lightweight, and though it's max resolution is only 1366x768, that can be viewed as a plus since it can get playable frame rates (at least 30 fps) on medium settings or higher for roughly every game at that resolution. You can also opt for a 1920x1080 screen for another $50, but if you're heavily into gaming you're probably not going to want that since...

I like that laptop too, but does have some people in the reviews complaining about the display (on other sites as well, not just this one). I understand it has a TN display, but can't tell if the people writing the reviews are just really picky or the screen is that bad.

You can also opt for a 1920x1080 screen for another $50, but if you're heavily into gaming you're probably not going to want that since that GPU can't push 1920x1080 effectively. Sure, you could get the 1080p screen and render the game at 1366x768 anyway, but rendering a game at 1366x768 on a 1920x1080 screen looks like ass. 1366x768 will look better on a 1366x768 screen since there's no uneven interpolation.

UPDATE: Though I don't have the Y50, I can bet where the complaints are coming from, and it's not from having a TN panel since the vast majority of laptops have TN panels. IPS is, unfortunately, not for us paupers. But anyway, I think the Y50 has a matte or "anti-glare" screen rather than a "glossy" screen. The trouble with it being anti-glare is that it has reduced color vibrancy, and that's probably the main issue. I didn't see an option for a Y50 without a matte screen, unfortunately... which is stupid.

Thanks, that makes sense! I'll consider that before making any purchase. I saw that laptop before, I believe, however I have decided to embrace the future since Windows 7 is on its way out, and try to get a Windows 8.1. Definitely helped me out though!

UPDATE: I actually found a laptop that has awesome specs and has an IPS screen, even though it is still "anti-glare". It has a faster HDD and better CPU, but the Lenovo has a slightly better GPU. I might get this one just because the DVD drive is not external and has an IPS screen, but still very slim and it is about the same price.
