Crackling during loud moments whilst gaming

I have a brand new Toshiba Soundbar which works flawlessly on my PC, PS4, Wii U but it seems to be playing up on my PS3.

I have it hooked up using a good optical cable to the back of my tv, which then has my 4 pieces of hardware above connected to it via HDMI cables.

Anyway I have been playing ICO and Dead Space 3 recently on my PS3 and it just sounds bad. The sound on ICO sounds like it was recorded using a phone microphone which can't handle the loud noises. And Dead space 3 seems to crackling during loud explosions and stuff. Not sure what is up with it and whether it is just bad sound design on these two particular games. I played a few other games and it seemed ok however I couldn't replicate any loud moments in my small collection of other games on my ps3.

Does anyone know the best course of action? New HDMI cable possibly? Or that there is nothing wrong at all?!

Any info you guys could give me would be great!

So it only happens during when whatever is happening is loud? Does this happen on the other consoles when whatever is happening is loud? It sounds like a clipping issue to me, which in theory, could still be confined to the PS3.

Yeah it's weird. During large set pieces or explosive moments during Dead Space 3 (ICO sounds bad in general but I think that is just down to it being a ps2 game) It doesn't do it on any other game I have tested so far but I don't have many other games that I can replicate that sort of sound. My other consoles sound fine so I think it's something to do with my PS3. It is a very old PS3 though so it could just be on it's way out :(

I suppose it is possible that it is dying hardware, but I would think that would be unlikely. You could try using one of the HDMI cables from another console that you know has working sound and see if it is a bad cable.

It has been years since I've owned a PS3 so I can't remember if it has a master volume. If you go into the sound settings, is there a master volume of sorts that you could turn down?
