I am going off to college in august and will need to buy a new laptop. Besides doing regular student and computer things my biggest priority is for it to be able to edit video with ease. I use the adobe programs including: Premiere pro, photoshop, and to a lesser extent after effects. I was looking at gaming laptops because they seem to have the best specs for the price. I see a lot of the laptops that are closer to desktop replacements are really big (ex. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231630) and I don’t know if that is practical for college even if the specs look nice. A lot of people recommend apple’s macbook pros for video editing but the more powerful ones are out of my budget and I feel i might miss out on the benefits of a pc (such as gaming). Would getting a laptop with really powerful specs even do much more for video editing? What would be the best option for power, price, and portability? (all of this is probably impossible)

1. What is your budget?

$1000 - $1300

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

As long as it can edit video swiftly I can probably compromise size.

3. What screen resolution do you want?

Full HD 1080p

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?

Desktop replacement. But the smallest desktop replacement.

5. How much battery life do you need?

3-4 hours would be ok.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

I would probably play games on it. CS:GO and Garys mod. minecraft maybe. and I don’t care that much for high settings.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)

Photo/video editing. Writing.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?

probably a lot.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

I think i will buy from amazon or newegg.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?

hopefully four years.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

DVD reader. don’t need blue ray or the ability to write.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

no preference. would like to hear your opinions on macs though.

13. What country do you live in?

USA

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

If it has an sd card reader that would be cool to.

I recommended this to someone earlier on this site.

This thing is a beast. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314160&cm_re=acer_laptop-_-34-314-160-_-Product)

It can play all of your listed settings on high (even if you don't want to :)) and it has a full HD screen with a 120GB SSD (fast boot durations). Additionally, 12GB's of RAM so video editing should be a piece of cake.

This is one of our options (http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/Battalion-101-W370SS-Gaming-Laptop), it includes the performance of the Acer and an SD-card reader, but it does not include an SSD and it's cheaper (you can customize it to include an SSD).

Buying used but best for what it is. Quad core for video editing (more cores). With NVIDIA gnu (CUDA CORES) for MUCH faster rendering plus 2gb of VRAM. Can add up to 32 GB of Ram. '

This is a desktop replacement. Heavy, and bulky. Can get hot (but exhausts heat very well). For video editing, this is the best you can get at your price range. This will be faster and more powerful than many desktops your collage will use. It is upgradable. It is 1080P LED screen. Cant stress enough, this is a great one.
