Any other suggestions for a gaming laptop are welcome. They cannot exceed $1300 though.

if you've got an OS already then you can get this with an 870M. it'll be more powerful than anything else in this price range.
if you don't then I'd definitely just get the Asus. build quality, heating and keyboard are all fantastic compared to any other competitor.

But wouldn't the 4gb 860 in the lenovo be better than the 2gb 860 in the asus? also is the asus upgrade-able in the future?

no and no.
the 4GB is to do with output bandwidth. It's only appropriate if you're linking the display out to a 4k monitor or something. Otherwise there's no difference whatsoever. There will be no difference in FPS.
and no the asus is not. Realistically only alienware is upgradeable as far as graphics power. most laptops can add an SSD or increase the ram, but that's it. Besides if you fiddle with either of them you void the warranty. Laptops are a whole different ball game than desktops.

Im just worried about the cooling on the lenovo because i would prefer the smaller laptop. Do you think it's ok for hours of gaming?

Personally I am a ASUS gamer. However, I have owned Lenovo, HP, and MSI gaming laptops. I perferred the ASUS by far, the build quailty is superior.

there hasn't been an in depth review of the y50 that specifies temperatures. So it's tough to say.
However Im sure with the price difference between the two you could just as easily buy a decent cooling pad.

It's just that everything about the Asus is better really. It truly is a fantastic machine that is well worth the somewhat premium price. Plus no laptops actually compare in cooling to the Asus ROG units.
