Issues: Some keys don't work, screen whitens, battery charger dosen't always charge. These problems all came after one another at the same time this year.

November is around the corner, I've seen some good Laptop deals on Newegg recently if you can't wait for Black Friday sales. You can tell us about your budget and what you intend to use it for as well as your region (US, Canada, Uk, etc).

The real question is how much did you originally pay for it? In my experience, Toshiba is junk unless you pay over $1000 for it. Usually more like $1200-$1600 for a quality laptop that will last you and is worth repairing when things like this happen. Sounds like you need to replace the keyboard. Battery chargers come and go, you can pick up a universal charger for something like $30 or $40. The keyboard may run anywhere from $30-$200 depending on what model laptop you have. The screen whitening portion could be a number of things. It COULD be the screen, but I'm guessing that has something to do with the motherboard. That's where cost becomes critical.

If I had a laptop, and it was a Toshiba, and I didn't pay a pretty penny for it, I'd replace it at that point. Sinking a couple to several hundred dollars into it after I only paid $600 or $800 for it isn't worth it to me. There's no telling, after 3 years, whether another part is going to fail a month after I replace all those parts. Average lifespan of a laptop is about 5 years. That is to say, it will last about 5 years before you have to put ANY money into repairing it. It doesn't surprise me that your Toshiba soiled the bed well before the 5 year mark.

I paid around $800.00 for the laptop. Jeez I had no idea Toshiba's were that bad (i've read a lot of people complaining about this brand). In that case what is a good brand/ a brand which will last a long time. I don't want to have to keep buying new computers since money is kinda tight for me.

im not going to lie, three and a half years is a fair while fo a laptop and if three problems have cropped up in 1 year then that means it is on its way out. if you get it repaired, it will cost around 70 which really isnt worth it for such an old laptop. you can get reall decent laptops for 350 letalone 500.

If I were you, I'd see if you can get a free quote from a local PC repair shop, then make a decision. I fixed my own laptop when mine had troubles (Gateway FX p7805u from 2005) and it still works, guess it might have to do with humidity and how well you take care of it.

And as far as decently powerful but affordable laptops, Lenovo is good. A few of my friends have them and we do gaming LAN parties.

Wow, from 2005 eh? yea i'll admit I did not take proper care of my laptop except to using canned air to remove dust from my laptop. Also where did they purchase the laptop, was it in store or through the internet?
