A lot of times I'll get an error message when I'm playing games that "windows is running low on system memory, close the following programs"

I know games use a lot of RAM so I'm ok with that, but is there any reason this is bad? Will this hurt my computer? Should I ignore the messages? should I try to find a way to reduce a game's RAM usage?

FYI Im using a lenovo y50 running the witcher 2, enhanced edition, on medium to high-ish settings

Have a look in the task manager to see if any programs are leaking any ram. This is how Microsoft explains the task manager (below).

Open Task Manager by right-clicking the taskbar, and then clicking Start Task Manager.

Click the Processes tab. Task Manager shows the processes currently running under your user account. To show processes running for all users, click Show processes from all users. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To add more columns, click View, and then click Select Columns. Select the check boxes for the columns you want to see, and then click OK.

Also have a look at this link it would help a little more.
