Hey all,

I just noticed yesterday that my sound on my HP ENVY 15-j031nr laptop has stopped working. I have not installed anything new recently, nor have I changed any audio settings before this happened. I've had the laptop for a little under a year and haven't had any issues. I am running Windows 8.1.

I've tried uninstalling the current audio drivers and reinstalling them. I've tried installing the new HP audio drivers they recommend but doesn't changed anything. I've tried going to device manager and fooling around with settings.

I've tried playing youtube videos and Itunes music. When I play either of them and click on the speaker on the bottom right, it shows the audio volume going up and down to the music/sound, but nothing comes out of the speakers.

I'm kinda lost at the moment on what to do. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks.

It's looking like your sound chip has failed then. That's a part integrated into the motherboard. Since that's a fairly new model it may still be under warranty; check with HP to see if it can be repaired under warranty.

There are two possibilities: there's an odd Windows error at fault, or a hardware failure. The first possibility can be resolved using the built-in Windows utility to refresh or reset Windows

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

You might want to make sure any info you want to save is backed up in case. The refresh option can be run without affecting files though the full reset will delete them.

IF that doesn't work, try an Ubuntu live CD. IF there's no sound in Ubuntu, the laptop is faulty

I tried the refresh option, and still have no sound. I have no idea what's causing this.

I haven't tried the Ubuntu option, as I have no clue on how to go on with that.

You can download the Ubuntu image from here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

save the .iso file to the pc. Insert a blank dvd in the drive then right-click the downloaded file and select "burn to disk"

If you don't have a disk you can use a USB thumb drive, using these instructions:

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

Boot from the DVD or USB stick (start PC with the disk in the drive or the stick inserted into a usb port, pressing F9 as it boots up. Select the DVD or USB stick as boot device). At a certain point the Ubuntu setup will ask whether to "Try Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu." Select "Try Ubuntu and the Ubuntu desktop will be loaded without changing anything on your system. It should play a startup sound if the sound is working - listen as the laptop boots up.

Also, have you tried pressing the volume up/down keys in the top row of that keyboard?

Yes, I've tried the keyboard volume controls to no avail. I just did the Ubuntu thing and got no sound on startup...and I even went to the volume controls and it says "test" for each speaker and got no sound from either.
