A client gave me an HP Laptop:
HP Pavilion dv5
Product: WQ798U#ABA
Model: dv5-2035dx

That has a rather odd problem.
When I press the power button, the laptop turns on, except for the screen. I then have to hold the power button to force it to turn off and then I turn on the laptop again and then the screen turns on.
Basically the computer has to turn on twice so that the screen turns on.

When the screen is on and I'm in Windows, everything works fine, and the screen doesn't look like its about to go out or anything like that.

The client told me that he's had this problem since the day he bought it, a few years ago, but he had to leave the country about a day after he bought it, so he didn't have a chance to return it.

I'm not sure what could be wrong with it. Any suggestions?

Solution
I think the cabling connecting to the LCD of the laptop needs to be reseated or try draining the CMOS battery by releasing the laptop battery and then hold the power button in 5-10 minutes.

I took out the CMOS battery for about 2-5 minutes and then reassembled everything and it seems to have worked. I'm going to let it sit there for the night and hopefully it's a permanent fix. Thanks for the solution.

I just left the computer w/o the main battery for the night and today in the morning I put it back in and it seems to be working. Thanks for the help!:) :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)
