I have an ASUS ROG laptop, its older, but I love it. I try and use it to play games and I've noted that after 2 or more hours it crashes; the screen goes black and the system basically hangs. I have to do a reboot to get it up again and usually I don't use it again until the next day. I suspect it is overheating. Are there any utilities I can use to watch the temp on the system as I use it? Also, is there anything I could do at all to remedy this (outside of buying a new machine)? Also It gets really hot on the bottom as I use it.

Personally i use AIDA64, it has build in monitor also available as the OSD panel or desktop gadget.

If its indeed temperatures then it might help hoovering the radiators and if not enough the it would be nice to try some cooling pad.
Unfortunately laptops in general are not designed to be at 100% GPU and CPU usage and overheating is typical issue while gaming.

Btw cooling pads are good only to some degree... if the laptop cooling system is designed badly it might not be enough.

Both of you have provided excellent information; I will look into a cooling pad and also ensuring it is properly cleaned.

I also found a great article here: http://www.howtogeek.com/67660/how-to-diagnose-and-fix-an-overheating-laptop/

Suggesting that using it in bed is problem as the sheets are obstructing air-flow.
