Just to start, I am an experienced technician with well over 100 laptops like this one successfully repaired. This problem has me stumped! Thanks for the help, and now the good stuff.

I am repairing a Gateway NE71b06u model: EG70

The customer used a universal charger which caused a short and afterwards no power indications, no boot. Simple problem i guess, so i Replaced the motherboard. First board no response so I assumed it was dead, sent it back and ordered another, same result. I decided to replace 12v power jack to make sure that wasn't the problem, it wasn't, still no power, no indication from the lights when plugged into a power source. I'm like wtf! :fou:

I am now under the assumption that the power button board is fried in some way, so I have ordered one of those. But in my experience that shouldn't affect the power indication lights, i believe i should still see an power connected light on the front of the mobo, but i get nothing. Am i on the right track or is this system cursed in some way.

I'm not familiar with that particular model but the method is easy. Start at the jack and start tracing the power. Some I have worked on had power regulation boards separate from the mobo. It could be the button board or something else. Just start tracing it out with a VOM looking for physically destroyed or distorted components along the way. You knew that. Just a reminder.

Maybe it toasted the indicator lights. That would depend on the schematic.

Thanks for the response. My voltmeter isn't working properly so i don't want to use it for testing, but i have ordered another. Usually don't have to use it since the problems are obvious, but this one it wasn't obvious. Don't have a schematic for it either. Would probably help but don't know where to find one.
