Battery Replacement, Does higher voltage matter?

Hi all,

I'm struggling to decide upon a predicument so honest advice is required. Please help me make the correct decision.

I recently purchased my dad a new laptop, specifically a Lenovo G710 i3 however it arrived with no battery.

So after Googling around I found a good deal. The one I bought has the following specs:
Battery Type: Li-ion
Voltage: 11.1 V
Capacity: 5600 mAh
However the one that originally came with it was a L11S6Y01:
Battery Type: Li-ion
Voltage: 10.8
Capacity: 4400 mAh
I'm really confused as this web site is stating it is for the Lenovo G700 series laptop.

In the hardware maintanence manual - PDF on P26 it states:
3. If the voltage is less than +11.0 V DC, the battery pack has been discharged.
Note: Recharging will be continued for at least 3 hours, even though the
indicator does not light on. If the voltage is still less than +11.0 V DC after recharging, replace the battery.
4. If the voltage is more than +11.0 V DC, measure the resistance between
battery terminals 5 and 7. The resistance must be 4 to 30 KΩ. If the resistance is not correct, replace the battery pack. If the resistance is correct, replace the system board.
However on P72 under the "parts" section it states the following batteries:

This web site I bought this battery from only lists 11.1v batteries for the "700" series.

For now I've asked my dad not to use the battery till I can determine if it is compatible or not. I've sent the below to the web site but haven't heard from them yet.
Dear Sir or Madam, on your web site site you are listing that all your Lenovo G700 series batteries (product IDs: 1003077, 1002989 and 1003139) are compatible. I bought the product 1002989 (5600mAh) for my dad's Lenovo G710 laptop. However 11.1v voltage on yours is different from the original Lenovo 10.8v. Can you please confirm that it is safe to use this battery with this laptop? According to the Lenovo hardware maintanence manual (http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_g700g710_hmm.pdf) on P26 "If the voltage is more than +11.0 V DC, measure the resistance between battery terminals 5 and 7. Can you clarify that the battery meets the statement requirements between pins 5 and 7? If not please can I arrange a return as I do not wish to have a laptop being damaged due to over voltage from the battery. Q) Does having a higher voltage have any negative effect (i.e. is it safe to use) with the laptop?

I'm so confused on what to do ... ? :(
 
Solution
If the battery fits the case and the voltage differences are +/- 10% you should be okay.
The battery charger and the Laptop voltage systems will only bring the battery up to the 10.8 level, so you will be okay.
Just make sure the vendor of the battery certifies that it will not damage your system and is designed to work with your system. The voltage difference of 0.3vdc is well within tolerances.
